Security Threat: Facebook Scam asks for money
Clever Facebook scam spreading all over the country right now
Scammers and impostors are setting up fake Facebook Messenger accounts pretending to be someone you know.
To set up a Messenger account all you need is a mobile phone number — you don't even need a full Facebook profile. Since there's no verification process to prove their identity, it makes it super easy for fraudsters to create fake accounts.
Fraudsters use the victim's name and profile picture to set up a fake Messenger account then send messages to the victim's friends and family asking for money to be sent through an online account. (We were shocked to learn how many people actually fall for this scam!)
There are settings you can adjust that will keep strangers from finding out personal information about you — use this link to make sure your Facebook account is as secure as possible.
